The San Miguel Corporation (SMC) management started the retooling of San Miguel Beermen and the Barangay Ginebra Kings - two teams which failed to enter the finals of the recently concluded 2009-2010 KC-PBA Philippine Cup. The trade news has it that the San Miguel Beermen sent Mike Cortez to the Air21 Express in exchange for a younger point guard in Alex Cabagnot.

Over the camp at Barangay Ginebra Kings, Doug Kramer and Rich Alvarez were sent in exchange for center Yancy De Ocampo.

Despite its heartbreaking loss to finalist Purefoods TJ Giants, the San Miguel Beermen managed to salvage a win against the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings for the battle for third place 95-88 to gain their 15th 3rd place finish in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup lead by veteran Danny Ildefonso with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Its not what we expected the Beermen to end up with after its Philippine Cup campaign; however, ending the conference in a positive note is a good thing for the Beermen who are now up to the task of defending its Fiesta Conference crown together with returning Best Import Gabe Freeman.

Roger Yap Stars Anew as Purefoods TJ Giants Destroyed the San Miguel Beermen, Gains Finals Berth

It still puzzles me how the San Miguel Beermen were not able to adjust to the kind of defense thrown at them by the Purefoods TJ Giants for three straight games thereby rendering them their first three straight losses eliminating them this conference. The Giants take away all hope that was left for the Beermen as they destroyed them in Game 6 of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup 87-78 lead by another sterling performance by Roger Yap for the third straight game.

How the Beermen played was another pain in the eye as they crumbled once again right at the start of the first quarter with two straight turnovers and let the Giants mount several leads and never recovered from there. The story of the game was almost similar to the previous two except that it all ended tonight.

San Miguel Beermen Fights For Survival, Will Try to Even Series at 3-3

The San Miguel Beermen now found their backs against the wall as they try to even up the series to 3-3 against the Purefoods TJ Giants in Game 6 today at the Cuneta Astrodome at 6:00 PM to force a winner-take-all Game 7 on Wednesday.

Hounding the Beermen are their two straight lousy showing where they allowed the TJ Giants to seize control early and never able to get back. That’s exactly how the series goes and based on the first two quarters, you can probably foretell who will win Game 6 if the trend continues.

Kerby Raymundo Stars as Purefoods TJ Giants Frustrates San Miguel Beermen, Takes 3-2 Series Lead

I totally made a wrong prediction that the Purefoods TJ Giants will be coming to this series tired after a gruelling series with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. What I saw in Game 5 was the exact opposite as the Purefoods TJ Giants gets past the San Miguel Beermen 94-82 and gain the series lead at 3-2 lead by one of its main man Kerby Raymundo.

In an earlier game preview, Purefoods TJ Giants coach Ryan Gregorio openly said that he rested the Giants on Thursday. Such may be the reason why they came out fresh in this game. This is the exact opposite for the Beermen who dragged their feet having one step late in getting rebounds and in defense. The Giants also capitalized on their hot outside shooting while the Beermen were not able to get their rhytm going missing one outside shot after the other.

San Miguel Beermen Sets Eyes on Game 5 and 3-2 Advantage Against Purefoods TJ Giants

Failing to execute their plays and allowing the opposing team to take a huge 21-point lead at the end of the first quarter caused the San Miguel Beermen’s downfall in Game 4 of their best-of-seven semifinals series against the Purefoods TJ Giants. As they get back on the hardcourt today at 7:00pm in the Araneta Coliseum, they will set their eyes on winning Game 5 to grab a 3-2 lead in the series.

Its pathetic scene to watch the Beermen gave up too much points on the Giants in the first quarter of that game and filing several technical fouls. How the Beermen fare in the the first quarter or the first half is quite significant in the series as the team that starts strong usually ends up as the victor.

Definitely, the San Miguel Beermen learned their lessons well from the loss from Game 2 as they get back at the Purefoods TJ Giants, 88-76 to take Game 3 and the lead 2-1 of their best-of-seven semifinals duel of the 2009-2010 PBA KC All Filipino Cup lead by Dondon Hontiveros.

With their brilliant adjustment in terms of defense, the Purefoods TJ Giants finds difficulty producing their needed points to come back in a game that they trailed in all quarters despite having a respectable defense against the Beermen.

Jay Washington Stars as San Miguel Beermen Crash Purefoods TJ Giants

As I predicted, fatigue will be a big factor for Game 1 as the San Miguel Beermen crash a worn-out Purefoods TJ Giants, 99-83 for Game 1 of theĀ  KFC PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals duel at the Araneta Coliseum. Leading the Beermen’s charge is the red-hot Jay Washington with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 6/9 field goal.

Purefoods was seemingly no match to the Beermen’s energy especially during the fourth quarter where the lead ballooned to above 15 points. Their main man James Yap is also suffering from an injury and only managed to produce 8 points, all from the free throw line.

San Miguel Beermen Battle Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants as Semis Kick-off Today

Despite losing its first two assignments at the start of the eliminations, I was still confident that the San Miguel Beermen will do well in the 2009-2010 PBA-KFC Philippine Cup. And true enough, they have reached the semifinals. Today, they will start the best-of-seven semifinals series against sister-team Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants at the Araneta Coliseum at 7:30 PM today.

I was quite happy with the output of the quarterfinals pairing between Purefoods and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters as the latter was able to extend the series to its maximum games of 5. I even want them to win. Anyways, with their help of getting the game into 5 games, I think that will be enough.
