In a basketball game dominated by the San Miguel Beermen most of the time, it’s quite sad to yield the win and the championship to a surprise team in Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants who were not supposedly to play in the finals.

The good thing is, it is just a pre-season game. Observers who watched the game saw that coach Siot Tanquincen experimented with his lineup in the forth quarter to see who are going to step up aside from Danny Seigle. Too bad no one did.

San Miguel Beermen‘s bigmen seem to be in shape to wage war against the bigmen of other teams with barely a week before the All-FIlipino Cup begins. The three towers of SMB in Dorian Pena, Jay Washington, and Mick Pennisi showed their might versus the three towers of the Coca-Cola Tigers in Asi Taulava, Nic Belasco, and Mark Telan.

The win gave SMB the ticket to the pre-season’s finals against the other bracket’s top basketball team. Too bad the strong contender in the other bracket, which is the Alaska Aces will not be playing as they will be off for a team building sessions. Playing with the Alaska should enable the coaching staff to scout them before their first meeting on Sunday.

When your lineup like Red Bull Barakos is already thin with the departure of some stars, the exit of another player, specially a bigman in Mick Pennisi will certainly leave Red Bull with a big hole in the middle.

Mick Pennisi was earlier traded to San Miguel Beermen in exchange for draft picks. Despite Mick’s departure, coach Yeng Guiao is determined to make the most out of his remaining players. Manning the shaded lane will be left to Carlo Sharma, Mike Hrabak, Rich Alvarez, draft pick Larry Rodriguez, and newcomer Gabby Espinas.

Showing some form of consistency in the Qatar invitational basketball tournament, Dondon Hontiveros leads the San Miguel Beermen with 14 points in a losing cause to the Egypt National Team.

Despite the loss, it was a good experience for the team which badly needed to jell with only several days coming into the conference opening. Without doubt, the loss also exposed some of the holes that the San Miguel Beermen should plug-in in order to win against the top teams of the PBA. These are the things that coach Siot Tanquingcen and the rest of the coaching staff should be working with before the team plunge into action.
