Jay Washington and Mick Pennisi wasted no time to prove their worth in the basketball team as they showed the way for the San Miguel Beermen by handily beating the undersized Red Bull Barakos in the opening game of the PBA Pre-Season Games.

To get into the Finals of the Pre-Season tournament, they only need to win against the Coca-Cola Tigers on September 26 (4:00 pm) at the Olivarez Gym in Paranaque.

San Miguel Beermen: Todays Powerhouse PBA Team?

san-miguel-beermen

With the recent failures of the San Miguel Beermen to snatch an elusive championship, it’s no wonder that it keeps improving its lineup going into a new season. It will march into the Philippine Cup strong – on paper.

Remember what happened last pre-season when the team’s stars including Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros returned after their stint from the RP National Team? That was also the time that they acquired Larry Fonacier from Red Bull.

Will Samigue Eman Play for San Miguel Beer?

Behemoth Samigue Eman has sustained a knee injury last season and the San Miguel management has decided to send him to the United States to examine it. Fortunately for him, American physician Steve Lombardo cleared him as fit to play after a careful examination.

What he need to do to strengthen his knee is to continuously take a series of therapy sessions. There’s no need to undergo surgery unlike team mate Danny Ildefonso.

SMB Signs Jay Washington, Mick Pennisi, and Bonbon Custodio

In a move to address their lack of ceiling when bigmen Danny Ildefonso and Samigue Eman got injured, San Miguel Beer get the services of bigmen Jay Washington and Mick Pennisi. They also signed an exciting player in Bonbon Custodio who is a known slasher who can penetrate the lane and open up the opposing team’s defense.

Now the question looming around is that will their entry provide the necessary improvements needed by SMB to get the coveted crown that has long escape them for several years already? Will it just be a mere rehash of what they have done last season when they acquired stars like Larry Fonacier, Enrico Villanueva and company?

Trade News: Mick Pennisi Traded to San Miguel Beermen

It was already confirmed that the trade rumors circulating around regarding Mick Pennisi moving to San Miguel Beermen were all true. Bigman Mick Pennisi was traded to San Miguel Beer in exchange for future draft picks. Because of this, he will be reunited with former Red Bull teammate Lordy Tugade in the team.

What triggered this trade was the relegation of bigmen Danny Ildefonso and Samigue Eman to the injured list to fill the void left by them. Pennisi is a great addition to the team with his hard-nosed defense and his deadly sweet shooting from beyond-the-arc. That’s enough to make the San Miguel Beermen competitive and big enough to compete on the upcoming 2008-2009 All-Filipino/Philippinne Cup.

Can Pennisi quickly adjust to Siot’s coaching style given many years of playing under Yeng Guiao’s system?

Trade Rumor: Mick Pennisi Traded to San Miguel Beer?

For the past few years, the San Miguel Beermen and the Red Bull Barakos have been trading partners with the SMB having the recipient of good basketball players that the Bulls are producing. Once again, another rumor circulating around basketball forums is that bigman Mick Pennisi is on his way to the Beermen.

If the rumors are indeed true, the San Miguel Beermen will toughen its frontline that already boosts of Dorian Pena, Danny Seigle, Danny Ildefonso, Samigue Eman, Marc Pingris, and newly acquired Jay Washington. Add to these biggies is Ken Bono whom I think needs to be shifted to other team.

For a basketball player who has been looking for decent playing minutes, Gabby Espinastrade to Red Bull Barakos is a great great news for him.

The former NCAA Rookie/MVP and a former San Miguel Beer player, Gabby Espinas has been playing behind the shadows of superstars of talent-laden teams like the San Miguel Beermen before being traded to the Air21 Express.

The supposed-to-be 3rd overall pick of the San Miguel Beermen, Jason Castro will be joining the Talk N Text Tropang Texters after completing a tournament in Malaysia to complete his contract with the Singapore Slingers.

I’m still not fully convinced with the recent trade that net the San Miguel Beermen Jay Washington instead of a possible future great talent in Jason Castro. The results will be seen at least after the Philippinne Cup stints of these two basketball players.
