There’s another good news San Miguel Beermen fans! Two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso and defensive monster Marc Pingris will be back in action soon to help the Beermen’s campaign in the 2009 Fiesta Conference.
According to a news from Inquirer.net, Danny Ildefonso will be back in the middle of April while Marc Pingris will be playing a few days or weeks from now.
Having the two play for the Beermen is very important to add more depth to a depleted lineup with the loss of Danny Seigle, Lordy Tugade, and Mike Cortez due to injuries. Danny Ildefonso’s veteran smarts will give the Beermen stability and leadership particularly in endgame situations where we need a go to guy to provide the points for us aside from our import (who will be a marked man).
Sports writer Cedelf P. Tupas of INQUIRER.net has the complete news story. Read on below.
Ildefonso, Pingris Back in Action Soon
Tuesday, March 10, 2009Already off to a fine start, San Miguel’s campaign in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Conference is expected to get another boost with the expected return of key locals from sick bay soon.
The injury-hit Beermen, who share the early lead with Purefoods at 2-0, will have two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso back in the middle of April, while Marc Pingris is close to recovering from a severe ankle sprain on his left foot.
Coach Siot Tanquingcen said he is hoping Danny Seigle, Mike Cortez and Lordy Tugade will also be able to recover in time to help the Beermen in the season-ending tournament.
The MVP in 2000 and 2001 seasons, Ildefonso also had athroscopic surgery on his left ankle, and bone spurs were removed from his right foot late last year.
Tanquingcen is satisfied with the Beermen’s performance so far, but cautioned his players against getting carried away by their big start.
“It’s not how you start, but how you finish,” Tanquingcen said of his team that went on a conference-leading 7-2 start in the All-Filipino Cup before getting caught in a slump that dropped them to the wild-card phase.
Stepping up for San Miguel in the first two games was Jonas Villanueva, who averaged 21.5 points.
Playing without an import after Nate Carter was not cleared by his team in France, San Miguel drew a career-high 27 points from Villanueva in a 93-89 win over the Aces.
The 25-year-old Bocaue, Bulacan-born playmaker, picked ninth overall in the 2007 Draft, was named as the KFC/Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for his exploits.
“He has always had the tools,” Tanquingcen said of Villanueva, who posted 16 points as the Beermen, led by debuting import Gabriel Freeman’s 40-point, 15-rebound effort, stopped the Titans, 114-105, Sunday.
