Until the final buzzer sounds, the game is NOT yet over. The San Miguel Beermen learned that lesson the hard way when they failed to contain Gabe Norwood in the paint as he tipped-in a missed shot by Allan Salangsang enabling the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to escape, 93-92.

With the San Miguel Beermen bigmen out to guard the bigmen of the Elasto Painters, the paint was left guarded by the guards of the Beermen. Their mistake is not boxing out Norwood who leaped high in time for the game stealing shot.

It’s another case of the Beermen failing to finish the game strong as they again struggled to put in the points in the crucial minutes of fourth quarter. It’s very visible that they need a go-to guy like Danny Seigle or Danny Ildefonso to provide stability during crunch time.

The Beermen’s last assignment is against the Barangay Ginebra Kings on an out-of-town game in Batangas on Saturday. It’s imperative for them to win it to at least secure a playoff for the quarterfinals slot.

I’m very disappointed with the loss that I don’t want to discuss it further.

Painters trip Beermen on Norwood tip-in

Gabe Norwood soared above the rim and tipped in a missed three-pointer by Allan Salangsang with one-tenth of a second left in the game as Rain or Shine squeaked past San Miguel Beer, 93-92, in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

It was a spectacular shot that ended the thrilling contest as the Rain or Shine team snatched victory from impending defeat to boost its bid for an outright semifinal berth.

“It was pure luck. There must be an angel who helped us out there,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia with the team grieving over the death of co-team owner Terry Que’s mother Que Piak Ha who passed away last Monday.

“I just jumped as high as I could then swung my arm, and it worked out. It’s really a blessing,” said Norwood.

“I felt I was playing so bad then the opportunity just came in. It’s easily the biggest shot I’ve ever made, winning an important game,” the Fil-Am guard said.

The Elasto Painters appeared to have blown away a won ball game when Norwood figuratively and literally rose to the occasion to salvage the victory for the team.

Improving its win-loss record to 10-7, Rain or Shine will assure itself of at least a playoff for an outright semis seat with a victory over Barangay Ginebra on Christmas Day in its last game in the double-round eliminations.

San Miguel took its second straight loss and slid to 9-8.

Norwood was 1-of-8 from the field before making the stunning winning basket.

San Miguel had threatened to steal the game as it erased a five-point deficit in the last 42 seconds, surging ahead at 92-91 on a six-point blitz by Dondon Hontiveros and Dorian Peña.

Peña grabbed an offensive rebound following a missed three-pointer by Lordy Tugade then scored on a short stab to close the crucial run that shoved SMB ahead with time down to 2.6 seconds.

Garcia quickly sued for time and mapped an alley-oop play for Norwood.

The play was foiled but Norwood nonetheless won it for the Elasto Painters on his tip-in.

The two teams earlier figured in a three-point shootout with the Beermen knocking in 19 and the Elasto Painters 12 – the combined number matching the all-time league high first recorded in Talk n Text-Air21 game last April 22.

Hontiveros led San Miguel with five while Salangsang paced Rain or Shine with four.
