Due to an operation that he needs to undergo, two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso will not be able to see action for 3 months. That means he will be missing most of the 2008-2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup.

San Miguel had already prepared for his abscense as justified with the recent acquisition of bigmen Jay Washington and Mick Pennisi. These two more than covered the spot that Danny I have left behind.

However, Danny Ildefonso is still a vital cog in the SMB rotation specially during the playoffs. Therefore, it is imperative that he recovers in time before the playoffs begin.

DOHA — San Miguel Beer will not really miss injured center Danny Ildefonso as it has several big men to man the slot come the PBA’s 34th season.

Coach Siot Tanquingcen has confirmed that the 6-foot-6 Ildefonso will be out of action for at least three months after a recent operation.

Ildefonso is still in the United States where the operation was performed. Only on Oct. 4, the opening day of the PBA Philippine Cup, will he know whether to continue his rehabilitation there or be allowed to come home.

“He had an athroscopic surgery on his left ankle and bone spurs were removed from his right foot, particularly the heel area,” said Tanquingcen.

Danny Seigle said they expect a tough battle minus the veteran Ildefonso, the 2000-01 Most Valuable Player.

“We’ll just have to man the fort until Danny I comes back,” said the 6-foot-7 Seigle, one of the most recognized faces to Filipinos here, along with Olsen Racela.

Aside from the 6-7 Dorian Peña, SMB has tall reinforcements in new recruit Jay Washington, who is 6-7, Mick Pennisi (6-9), sophomore Ken Bono (6-6) and Marc Pingris (6-5). However, Samigue Eman (6-10) is still recuperating from an injury.

The Beermen arrived in the capital city of Qatar on Tuesday night for a four-nation basketball tournament organized by the Qatar National Olympic Committee to prepare its National basketball squad for the Stankovic Cup in October.

Local basketball club Al Sadd and the Egypt national basketball team are also participating.

Against the Qataris, whose tallest player is 6-11 and only two others are below the six feet, Tanquingcen said they have a chance as long as they remain stubborn on both ends of the floor.
