Many of the uninformed San Miguel Beermen fans are cursing coach Siot Tanquincen of benching or not giving enough playing time to several of their favorite basketball players. What they don’t know is that some of these Beermen players are really hurt and are nursing an injury of sort.
Let’s start from the least affected with his injury to the one with the great impact of the injury to his career.
Dondon Hontiveros – Shoulder Injury
Although he played in their last game against the Purefoods TJ Giants, Dondon is suffering from a shoulder injury. It’s not that serious so he was still able to play with limited minutes. However, his shoulder injury is bothering him somehow. As a result of that, the coaching staff decided not to play him with extended minutes. Would you risk one of your main scorer to injury that the playoffs is coming?
A limited minutes of Dondon Hontiveros because of his shoulder injury means lesser scoring option for the San Miguel Beermen. You also take away the Beermen’s main guard defender.
Marc Pingris – Achilles Tendonitis
It was assistant coach Pido Jarencio who reported in an interview that Marc Pingris was not allowed to play due to a sore achilles tendon or is suffering an achilles tendonitis. According to Wikipedia, an achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of a tendon. In Marc Pingris case, its the achilles tendon that is affected. It’s not that serious so he can play soon when the soreness is gone.
When Marc Pingris is not playing, San Miguel Beermen losses a strong post defender and intimidating shot blocker. An example of that is our loss to the Purefoods TJ Giants. Marc Pingris can guard Kerby Raymundo one-on-one and he could have made the difference in that ballgame.
You also need a Marc Pingris inside to give you energy to rub to other Beermen players. You definitely have missed his "bang bang" tactics after he made a three-point play opportunity.
Danny Ildefonso – Bone Spurs Operation

Danny Ildefonso visited the United States in September to remove the bone spurs in his right foot and had an athroscopic surgery on his left ankle.
According to Wikipedia, bone spurs form due to the increase in a damaged joint’s surface area. and usually limit joint movement and typically cause pain. Athroscopic surgery, on the other hand, is is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision.
Below is the first writeup about Danny Ildefonso’s operation.
Injury Sidelines Danny Ildefonso For 3 Months
Danny Ildefonso would probably be back in action sometime next year when the playoffs starts. Hopefully, the San Miguel Beermen grabs one of the two semifinals tickets so that Danny I will have more time to heal. His veteran moves and playoffs experience is definitely needed by the team in playoffs where game play is on the next level.
Danny Seigle – Back Spasms Injury
There was no reported news on the exact condition of Danny Seigle but definitely, the rumors that he is being benched by coach Siot Tanquincen for personal reasons has no truth. According to a San Miguel Beermen insider Than, he will not be playing indefinitely because of back spasms. Yes, this is related to the reported pinched nerve at the back.
If you will recall some years back, back spasms was also the case why he was not able to play in some conferences. As with Marc Pingris, Danny Seigle was missed in the game against Purefoods where the San Miguel Beermen needed a go-to-guy to provide instant offense in crunch time. If not him, he can always be a decoy as most teams will double team him leaving other team mates open.
Mike Cortez – Right Knee ACL Injury
Probably the most serious among the injuries is Mike Cortez’s right knee ACL. This could be a career-ending injury considering he already injured his left knee with ACL some years back in Alaska uniform. Below is the news article we posted here by the time he injured his right knee.
Injury Report: Mike Cortez Suffers Right Knee ACL, Out For 6 Months
Although I personally believe that Mike Cortez is liability in the San Miguel Beermen’s run-and-gun system because he is dribbling too much and causing crucial turnovers, he is still needed in setting up half-court set plays. Right now, his services is quite missed when the team started to use Bonbon Custodio as a point guard when they failed to land a suitable point guard from the free agency or a first stringer point guard from other teams.
Despite of the injuries, the San Miguel Beermen is still on the second spot of the team standings at 7-5. However, other teams are slowly catching up. It is imperative that the coaching staffs do their homework in doing the necessary adjustments as the end of the two-round eliminations is getting near and we need all the time for our players to get back in shape.
