In a basketball team loaded with the known superstars of the league, you would not expect a rookie to lead the San Miguel Beermen team in terms of point production in a particular game. But that was what Bonifacio “Bonbon” Custodio exactly did in their game against the Alaska Aces last Sunday in a losing effort.

Drafted at #8 in the first round, Bonbon immediately showed what he can contribute to the team by providing a team-high 14 points on a 7-of-9 shooting percentage in the 2-point area in just his first game as the San Miguel Beer rookie.

Having gifted with a sweet-shooting hand, he conspires with Jonas Villanueva in the first half with his streak shooting that help the Beermen erect a 19-point lead. He also has a nose for the ball when he got an offensive rebound off a Danny Seigle’s miss.

Another skill that he has is his ability to read the defense. This enables him to find open shots when a team mate spots him up. And finally, the most notable charactiristics that he has that I observed is that he has no fear of taking shots when an opportunity arises.

Things to improve for him on my checklist are his slashing ability and proper positioning in fastbreaks for him to score or avoid turnovers.

Showing us his potential and his contribution for this week earned him as the choice for SMB Player of the Week. I hope to see more of him contributing tomorrow against the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.
