SMB Player of the Week: Bonbon Custodio Shines Brightest Among San Miguel Beermen Stars

In a basketball team loaded with the known superstars of the league, you would not expect a rookie to lead the San Miguel Beermen team in terms of point production in a particular game. But that was what Bonifacio “Bonbon” Custodio exactly did in their game against the Alaska Aces last Sunday in a losing effort.
Drafted at #8 in the first round, Bonbon immediately showed what he can contribute to the team by providing a team-high 14 points on a 7-of-9 shooting percentage in the 2-point area in just his first game as the San Miguel Beer rookie.
Having gifted with a sweet-shooting hand, he conspires with Jonas Villanueva in the first half with his streak shooting that help the Beermen erect a 19-point lead. He also has a nose for the ball when he got an offensive rebound off a Danny Seigle’s miss.
Another skill that he has is his ability to read the defense. This enables him to find open shots when a team mate spots him up. And finally, the most notable charactiristics that he has that I observed is that he has no fear of taking shots when an opportunity arises.
Things to improve for him on my checklist are his slashing ability and proper positioning in fastbreaks for him to score or avoid turnovers.
Showing us his potential and his contribution for this week earned him as the choice for SMB Player of the Week. I hope to see more of him contributing tomorrow against the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

Hi, SMB0428…nice review…SMB really made the right choice in drafting Bonbon Custodio. I would say that he is the next “Samboy Lim” of SMB , the second “Mr.100-percent” of SMB (the first was Norman Black) and hoping he would also be the next “Mr. Excitement” in the PBA…he has the right attitude, as you said, he has no fear of taking shots whenever he has the opportunity and knows the proper positioning…maybe at this early, he should have his own monicker…any suggestion?
i can only think of two appropriate monickers for Bonbon: “Fearless Warrior” (warrior- because he’s a former UE Warrior) or “Wise Guy”…..what do you think?

Hi iNDigo,
I like the “Fearless Warrior”. I’m not good at giving monickers though. :D
Let’s just wait for the TV anchors for this one. If Bonbon is really that great and will dish out good games consistently, it will not escape Quinito “The Dean” Henson’s or Miko Halili’s attention.
These guys created most of the current PBA players monicker.
